And so we return to the question that is sometimes proved true, sometimes not: Are sequels always better than the original? Well, we have films like Shrek to prove that sequels aren't, but this game is in limbo between the two. Developed by Obsidian, a reasonably unheard company, they have to step up to the massive challenge Bioware has set of continuing the KOTOR franchise with a sequel as good as or even better than the original.

Set in the Star Wars universe, of course, this story takes you to a much darker time; 5 years after the Jedi civil war, with a galaxy in turmoil and the Jedi Order no longer in existence. Immediately, the music and clever use of lighting sets this dramatic and depressing scenario, and emerges you into the game.

Following on from Bioware's example, the graphics are astounding, with the minutest of details adding great character and realism to an environment. Cut scenes string the story along nicely and, like many other RPG's, they are not so many that they become annoying. The characters themselves are unique and individual, from the cocky Han Solo alike Atton Rand to the delicate and mysterious handmaiden Brianna. Again, you build up a party but this time round the light/dark alignment has an interesting twist; your choices will affect the alignment of your companions, so some allies may admire leadership or brutality and you can gain and lose influence with them accordingly. Choose the path of the light, and allies such as Bao-Dur, a Zabrak scarred from the battle of Malachor V will follow you but fall to the dark and you will be praised by Kreia, who takes it upon herself to train you.  

The usual selection of bonus missions and main quest missions are present, and these will take you all over the main 8 planets: Peragus II, a mining asteriod, Telos, Korriban, Dantooine, Malachor, Nar Shaddaa, Onderon and its moon Dxun. Each environment is so alive and full of exploration and fascination that you will literally gawp at certain points in the game.  

For the Star Wars enthusiast, the history of the saga, back to the time of the great dark lords has always been of interest and here it will be fulfilled. You learn a huge deal and also experience many events which go down in the notable part of the Star Wars history. It is paramount in certain missions you visit many historic locations such as the tomb of Freedon Nadd on Dxun, and in such places you will do battle with the dark side of the force. Unlike the previous KOTOR game, in which you made an ultimate decision to be either light or dark, Jedi or Sith, even after you make the decision this time round you will continue to gain dark and light side points, right until the very end moment.

So, is this sequel better than the original? In my opinion no, they are both alike in their story, design and graphics. Even if you're not a Star Wars fan, this is a unique RPG, made in such a way that it is entertaining enough to pull you in and make you care about those around you and the choices you decide. Now the big question is: when is the next one coming out?
