Usually when producing a game, the makers try and think “what kind of cool tough character does this game need to make it great?” Unfortunately producers also seem to occasionally ask themselves “what kind of witty sarcastic character would annoy gamers?” Sometimes they’re good, more than likely they’re annoying…but every now and then, they’ll give us a good laugh. ...
Valen Dreth (Oblivion)
With the massive world Oblivion provides, it doesn’t come to a surprise that you’ll have at least a few smart asses. However, one that is glaringly obvious in the game.. is Valen Dreth. If you’ve even played 5 minutes of the game, you’ll know him. In fact the second you create your characters he’s already calling you over, about to spring a series of insults into your direction. Though I don’t imagine it would turn gamers off from the game, it’s a hell of a way to welcome you into a game. “Thanks for buying our Video-Game, now allow us to insult you.”
RoBoy (Jet Set Radio Future)
Many-a-gamers will commonly call others a “newb,” “newbie,” or “n00b.” It is rare that an in-game persona will label you one almost immediately upon starting the game. Though RoBoy doesn’t necessarily make fun of you and reply with quick sarcasm, his dancing around to techno and writing in near “1337;” you can imagine the mood.
Baird (Gears of War)
Sometimes sarcasm can be a good thing! As Gears of War’s only truly funny and care-free character…he’s definitely a plus. Even out side cut scenes, if you just listen to his during-gameplay dialogue you’ll know he’s a…well, smart ass.
Sergeant Major Avery J. Johnson Junior (Halo Series)
Since we first played Halo we were introduced to the loveable, yelling, Sergeant Johnson. We may not know exactly how he got through multiple near-deaths (and some definite death) experiences; he always tends to come back in one piece. After killing countless Elites, Grunts, and Brutes…fun comical lines (from a Human) are embraced by all of us. Though, take safety in knowing he isn’t yelling AT you.
You
Now, technically the players aren’t in-game characters. But they definitely take hold of an avatar, kill off your team mates and friends…then make fun of you. Not to say it isn’t accepted by the community, but saying you don’t know at least one smart ass on your friends list…is a complete lie. There’s good and bad ones, and sometimes you need someone on your side who isn’t a complete “stick in the mud.” Yet other times, that mute button seems to be the smart move against that ass.
