Published by: SEGA Developed by: Sonic Team Genre: Action (Platformer) Number of Players: 1 Sonic the Hedgehog is a mainstay in my heart. I've loved him ever since he debuted on the Genesis using the fictional "Blast Processing" to race around at super sonic speeds. Sonic really was to my generation, "The New Rock Alternative" to Super Mario Bros. classic rock. But just as I and many like me have gotten slower with age, so has Sonic. When word of blue hedgehog being reborn on next-gen systems got out, I was anxious to relive the days of Michael Jordan owning the court, me strapping on my Nike Air Maxes and "The blue dude with tude" being returned to glory. But sadly, Jordan doesn't own the court these days, Air Maxes aren't cool and Sonic ain't fast. As you start the game, memories of what this franchise once was rush into your head, because the game initially is a great representation of what a Sonic game should be. As soon as you unlock more stages that's where things go wrong. When you complete the story mode you'll encounter an unacceptable glitch, you can't get any more rings than necessary to complete the last stage. If that isn't bad enough feature after feature is missing from this game. Fans were promised an overwhelming number of options that somehow didn't make it into the final product. I presume SEGA considered jumping on the DLC bandwagon and sell us features over XBL that were already complete. Besides all this, there are some good parts. Those familiar with Sonic's outings on the Dreamcast and last-gen systems will find the controls and, game in general, very familiar. You'll be surprised at the new features; like playing as Silver and having a blast throwing objects, riding vehicles with Shadow , running through the great Mach-speed zones with Sonic. It would have been better if characters like Tails or Rouge had better attacks than ring throw/ bomb throw. Amy only had one hammer smash and a horrible cloaking move which is useless. Sonic's spin dash is useless. And there you have it folks. That's about the extent of changes/additions. How's the game sound you ask? The music in the game is extremely good just like the other Sonic games. With next gen comes different changes in music and Sega did this part great. You're not bombarded the entire time by cheesy 80's rock. This game has some decent voice acting compared to the latest Sonic games, but it still doesn't have the polish of Sonic Adventure 2. What really annoys me is the high pitch voice of Tails, Silver's voice bugged me after a while, and Omega sounded better in Sonic Heroes. - Is this the Dreamcast? Sure those graphics were great, but the only improvement since then seems to be a very slight increase in pixels, a larger color palette, and some lighting effects. -It's Sonic, so you basically know what you're getting before you ever boot up the game. -Replay Value is non-existent and a huge reason for the score -Controls are surprisingly good.
Final Score: 6/10
