This year was decent for Midway Games as the titles they were relying on, UT 3 and Stranglehold, performed as expected. Now as they enter 2008, they have a new plan as Midway boss David Zucker has indicated they intend to have “fewer, bigger, better” video game titles in 08. More after the jump:
David Zucker, the chief executive officer of Midway said, “The newer systems, such as Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, require a lot of work developing the technology foundation. We have put a fair amount of money and effort into doing that. We are putting a lot of the challenges behind us. It’s been a tough ride.” while speaking to the Chicago Tribune.
In 2008, Midway will also be banking on Hollywood tie-ins to rake in the dough. Analysts also agree that next year is going to a critical one for Midway. They feel that the company will have to get the products from their internal studios to start performing at retail. But the analysts did mark that Midway has started to get better breadth and deeper lineup of video game titles.
XF’s Take:
Midway is one of the older players in the industry. While our soft side still has love for the company that once owned part of Atari and brought us NBA Jam, we’ve almost accepted the fact we’ll be burying these guys next to long time friends Acclaim soon. Midway’s old way of business doesn’t fly anymore. Hopefully they can turn things around and do things different as they say, but honestly, David Zucker isn’t the guy to lead them in that new direction.
